The Prime Minister of Uganda Rt Hon Nabbanja Robinah is camping in the Elgon subregion to oversee complete relocation of people from disaster high areas that is ongoing.
On arrival in Mbale city this afternoon, the Premier was received by the Disaster state Minister Lilian Aber, Karamoja affairs state Minister Namboozo Florence, area MPs, Local and opinion leaders.
Nabbanja addressed a stakeholders meeting attended by leaders from all districts in the Elgon subregion.
The Premier told the meeting that, her 3 day visit to the area aims at setting mechanisms of ensuring immediate relocation of all people in disaster prone areas to already gazzeted safe places.
According to Nabbanja, the current relocation phase features a new cash transfer policy, which provides each household with shs17 million shillings (shs10 million from the government and shs7 million from development partner GiveDirectly), along with two acres of land in Bunambutye.
"This policy aims to empower families to build their own homes compared to the previous model of providing fully constructed houses" Nabbanja reiterates.
Upon the guidance of the President, government has allocated 50 billion shillings to resettle the remaining over 5000 households.
