Though, Speaker Among dismayed as NRM MPs shunned Ssegirinya sendoff session

The government side of the house was nearly empty with the front bench which is usually occupied by cabinet ministers completely unoccupied.

House Speaker Hon Anita Among expressed disappointment on Friday morning over the absence of NRM MPs during the parliamentary special sitting to pay tribute to Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

The session kicked off at 9:00am with only a handful of MPs, mostly from the opposition side.

The government side of the house was nearly empty with the front bench, which is usually occupied by cabinet ministers completely unoccupied.

On the order paper, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja was supposed to move the motion to pay tribute to the fallen legislator.

The Prime Minister, however, was absent and so were all her deputies, forcing the speaker to request Hon Abdul Katuntu, an independent and most senior Muslim MP to read the motion.

In her speech, the speaker said she was dismayed by the absence of the government ministers and NRM MPs.’

“When such a thing happens, we all ought to be here, to give a decent send-off to our colleague,” she said.

“There is no politics in this thing.  There should never be politics when we have lost our own because today is me, tomorrow is someone else.”

MPs, including Hon Asuman Balasirwa were angered by the government gesture. Basalirwa tasked the speaker to explain whether she was privy to the reasons for the absence of the government representatives, which she said she wasn’t.

Hon Among urged the MPs to carry on with the session, promising to hand the matter “in the absence of visitors.”

Update: Hon Rukia Nakadama the the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister arrived for the session a few minutes before 10 am.

She explained to the house that she was late because of miscommunication from the speaker's office, having been informed earlier that the session was to begin at 10 am.

The speaker, however, dismissed this claim stating that the order paper was very clear about the schedule.
