IGG Betty Kamya moots a debate on Speaker Among’s multi-billion property in London after being tickled by journalist

KAMPALA – In May last year, Uganda netizens were shocked after it emerged that the President had written to the Speaker, seeking an explanation over claims that she owns property in the UK.

Museveni’s letter came after the UK embassy in Uganda reportedly shared details of the property, in the form of Flat 4, Silk House 7 Waterden Road, London E20 3AL UK, which they claimed was owned by Among. “I have got information that is contrary to what you told me… Do you own that house or are you renting it?” “By copies of this letter, I direct the Minister of Foreign Affairs to conduct and get the details regarding this house. The Inspectorate General of Government is also informed,” the letter read.

However, in the same month, the NRM blue-eyed lady from Bukedea verbatimly wrote back to President Museveni distancing herself from the said rumors.

In response, Among says: “While I had chosen not to respond to the pieces of malicious content and schemes that have been directed at me by various actors…” Among responded.

Though the debate later fizzled out, it perhaps wasn’t satisfactory to the public. Relatedly, the same question was raised to IGG Betty Kamya recently while interacting with the media. This seems to have trickled to the extent of highlighting it on her social media handles.

She stated that: “So, last week on Monday, I went to the Media Center to remind public officials about a constitutional requirement for them to declare their income, assets, and liabilities to the IGG next month.

In broad daylight, one reporter asked me what the IGG has done about Speaker Anita Among’s reported property in London, and in broad daylight, I answered, and I’m quoting myself verbatim – “First, it’s not illegal for any Ugandan to own property in London or anywhere outside Uganda as long as they acquired it legally, and with resources they can account for.

What is illegal is not to declare it to the IGG. True, the former British High Commissioner to Uganda is said to have reported to the President that Rt. Hon. Among had property in the UK. We searched through HM Land Registry in London.

We confirmed that the property reported to belong to Speaker Anita Among was not registered in her name (it’s registered as PLACES FOR PEOPLE’S HOME LTD) – to the fertile imagination of certain journalists – that was understood to mean that the IGG clears the speaker of any impropriety.”

Kamya further questioned if the journalists are professionally and ethically trained or if they only aim at selling their stories. “……. Do they teach professional ethics in the school of journalism? Many just must sell a story, whether it’s factual or not, at any cost,” she wrote via her X handle, formerly Twitter.
