In a dramatic bust, police finally arrested Taufik Virani of Crown Polymer (U) Limited, the mastermind behind one of the largest counterfeit goods operations in the country.
Taufik known for flooding the market with poor quality plastics was picked up on Friday the 31/1/2025 in a raid at his factory and warehouse at Tirupati Industrial Park, Kyebando.
Police found his workers in production, a warehouse full of counterfeit packaged products ready for dispatch to the market. They recovered samples of goods under production and designs for different products like Metro, Classic, Summit and Mugumu. But despite years of illegal activity and previous brushes with the law, sources say he’s getting a surprisingly soft touch from police.
For example, he was immediately released on bond within 2 hours of his detention, within 24 hours police was ready to open his factory to allow production ignoring the protests from the association of manufacturers and the aggrieved manufacturers themselves says ED of UPRA.
‘His factory and warehouse should be locked down until his prosecuted.’ One officer familiar with trademark protection commented. “Instead the police is convincing us on why he cannot be detained and why he should be allowed to continue work.”
Taufik’s operation which authorities say has raked in millions copied everything flooded the market without paying taxes while the real brands took the losses, and the unsuspecting customers end up with cheap imitations.
Despite the various complaints against Taufik as investigations take place, many are wondering whether justice will be served and the fake goods kingpin will be brought to book.
