Businesses in Mbale City were paralyzed as authorities enforced trade order regulations, removing merchandise from shop verandas and pedestrian walkways.
The joint operation, conducted by Mbale City Council and police, was led by Mr. Geoffrey Mugisha, the Mayor of Mbale Industrial City Division, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
The operation led to the confiscation of goods found in violation and the arrest of five offenders, who were taken to Mbale Municipal Court.
Speaking to Bugisu intellectual forum Mugisha stated, that the operation aimed to restore order in the city and ensure traders operate within designated areas.
"We are working to reorganize Mbale City and return it to how it used to be. The city has become chaotic, with vendors abandoning markets to operate on the streets. Taxis and buses have also deserted their designated parks and are now blocking walkways," he explained.
Mbale City Council's senior spokesperson, James Kutosi, told Bugisu intellectual that the exercise focused on clearing central market areas, Cathedral Avenue, Naboa Road, Kumi Road, Republic Street, and other streets.
"This is not about inconveniencing people but ensuring order in the city. We want pedestrians to move freely without obstruction," Kutosi emphasized.
He further warned against traders encroaching on verandas. "Some shop owners extend their businesses onto the walkways, creating hazards. We want a city where everyone can move safely," he added.
Kutosi reassured the public that the operation was primarily focused on sensitization rather than strict enforcement. However, some offenders were arrested and will face prosecution.
Residents like Bakari Semu of Nabuyonga Ward praised the initiative, saying it would help keep the city clean.
Meanwhile, Mr. Steven Masiga, spokesperson for Inzu Ya Masaba, commended the authorities but urged them to properly record confiscated goods to prevent losses.
"The enforcement officers are doing a good job, but they should document items before seizing them," he advised.
