Vehicle Traffic on the Mityana-Kampala road was Saturday morning brought to a standstill after a fuel tanker exploded into flames near the Kiwawu tea estate rendering half of the road impassable, creating a major disruption for travelers.
A police statement from the Traffic Police Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, confirmed the fire incident which he said prompted an emergency response from the fire brigade and police teams to the scene to contain the blaze.
“A fuel tanker today morning on 08/02/2025 caught fire on the Mityana-Kampala road in Mityana District, near Kiwawu tea estate. The incident has blocked half of the road and made it impassable. Our team is on the scene, securing the area and directing traffic as the fire brigade is also responding to extinguish the fire,” SP Kananura said.
The Traffic PRO urged using the Mityana-Kampala route to exercise patience and adhere to the instructions given by traffic officers on the ground.
“In case you are travelling on this route, please exercise patience and follow the instructions of the traffic officers. We will keep you updated on the status of the road until it is cleared,” he stated.
“Your safety is our top priority. Please avoid the area until the fire is extinguished and the road is cleared,” Kananura emphasized.
Kananura assured that efforts are underway to extinguish the fire and restore normal traffic flow, and confirmed there were no casualties involved.
Fuel tanker accidents have been a recurring safety concern in Uganda, often leading to casualties and road closures. Experts have repeatedly called for stricter regulations on fuel transportation and improved emergency response measures to prevent such tragedies.
SP Kananura has assured the public that they will provide continuous updates as the situation develops.
