Speaker Among Praised For Resurrecting The Women's Parliament After 35 Years


Today, The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anitah Among, together with other Members of Parliament are attending the second Women's Parliament session under the theme, consolidating women's social and economic transformation in Uganda ahead of Women's Day celebrations on 8th March.

This was last hosted in the Parliament of Uganda in 1995, approximately 35 years of no session.

While making her remarks, the state minister for Gender and social development, Hon. Peace Mutuuzo thanked the speaker of Parliament for reviving  Women's Parliament.

"On behalf  of other members let me take this opportunity and thank the speaker of the August House for the efforts of reviving this great Parliament. This Parliament last had its sessions 35 years ago but it was very vibrant"-Minister Mutuuzo.


She further stressed that all resolutions discussed in this Parliament shall be presented before parliament, head of the stakeholders for implications.

In her remarks, Speaker Among The Speaker has urged women leaders in Uganda to protect the girl child from harmful cultural practices, early marriages, female circumcision, rape, and school dropouts.

Among further thanked President M7 for empowering the women economically, calling upon women to keep supporting and voting for him.

"Women, if you want to be better than you are today, the only solution is President Kaguta Museveni, a leader who truly loves the women of Uganda"-Speaker Among.


The speaker also thanked the women for fighting against lgbtq in Uganda.

The Women you see here are the ones who passed the Anti-Homosexuality law, which states that a woman must marry a man. I carried the cross single-handedly by being sanctioned. I ready to carry it again for the good of the women of Uganda and the future generations of this country" - Among stressed.

During the session, Hajjat Faridah Kibowa has  been elected Speaker of the 2nd Women's Parliament, with Hon. Mackline Natukwasa as her deputy. 


The second Women's Parliament session is currently underway.
