Uganda Delegation Led by PS Zawedde Explore Tech Innovations at the Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona-What it Means


A Ugandan delegation led by Dr. Aminah Zawedde is exploring opportunities at the MWC Barcelona 2025 to advance digital inclusion, AI deployment, and smart industry solutions for Uganda’s economic growth and digital future.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Assistant Commissioner of Research and Development at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Ambrose Ruyooka and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine are attending the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Spain, an annual trade show organized by the GSM Association (GSMA) dedicated to the mobile communications industry.

The delegation participated in discussions with other delegates on Industry Digital Transformation, exploring the roles of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G in key sectors. The delegation also examined innovations in education, healthcare, mining (oil and gas), and manufacturing, aligning with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap.

Launched in August 2023 by Vice President, H.E. Jessica Alupo, the Digital Transformation Roadmap is a comprehensive plan designed to propel Uganda into the digital age. It is built upon five key pillars:

Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity: Enhancing and expanding the digital infrastructure to ensure that all regions of Uganda are connected.

Digital Services: Developing and providing a wide range of digital services to improve efficiency and accessibility for all citizens.

Cyber Security, Data Protection, and Privacy: Ensuring robust security measures and protecting citizens’ data and privacy in the digital space.

Digital Skills: Promoting digital literacy and skills development to prepare Ugandans for the demands of the digital economy.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Fostering a culture of innovation and supporting entrepreneurial ventures to drive economic growth.

The delegation also had engagements with global tech leaders, investors, and innovators, exploring opportunities to advance digital inclusion, AI deployment, and smart industry solutions for Uganda’s economic growth and digital future.

On the sidelines of the event, Dr. Zawedde also engaged with Eng. John Tanui, Kenya’s Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy to strengthen regional collaboration on technology-driven development.

Mobile World Congress remains a key platform for shaping digital transformation. Uganda is committed to leveraging this event to drive partnerships and harness emerging technologies for sustainable development.
