Youth Urged to Embrace Skills Development

Young people have been encouraged to prioritize vocational skills as a means of empowerment and development. This call was made by Emma Bwayo, the Namisindwa Male Youth Councilor, while addressing students currently undergoing skills training at the Presidential Skilling Centre, Bugisu in Lukhonje, Mbale District, over the weekend. The students are preparing for their final Level 1 DIT exams in various courses, including carpentry, shoemaking, hairdressing, baking, and welding.

Bwayo emphasized that skills development is the way forward for young people and urged the government to support graduates with startup capital. He also called on Parish Development Committees (PDCs) and EMYOOGA committees to include these graduates among the beneficiaries to help them start their careers.

The hub manager, Philip Woniala, commended parents for entrusting them with their children and appreciated the government’s continued support. He encouraged new applicants to prepare, as enrollment for the next intake will begin next month, assuring them that the government fully funds the training. He also warned that enrollment is entirely free and cautioned against any individuals attempting to charge money for the process.

Meanwhile, Mukhwana Shamim Brenda, a building and construction student from Bududa, and Munialo Herbert, a hairdressing student from Manafwa, expressed their gratitude to the President for this initiative. They encouraged fellow youths to join the program and pledged to use their acquired skills to contribute positively to their communities and personal growth.

Currently, 240 students from Bugisu are undergoing training at the hub as part of the 4th intake, bringing the total number of trained youth to 938 since its launch in 2022.
