Dr. Amina Zawedde, The Permanent Secretaryof the MMinistry of ICT and National Guidance has emphasized Uganda’s commitment to fostering ethical, people-centered AI.
DR. Zawedde made the remarks during the ongoing Global AI Summit on Africa 2025 (#GAISAfrica2025) In Rwanda.
She highlighted the importance of robust policies, collaborative partnerships, skills development, and creating AI solutions that resonate with Uganda’s unique context and values during a panel discussion at the Global AI Summit in Kigali.
"Uganda and Africa at large has the potential not only to adopt AI but to shape it. By aligning our policies, harnessing our talent, and investing in research and innovation, we can build AI ecosystems that are truly made for and by Africa"- Dr Zawedde.

- Innovation and Regulation: There was a push for harmonizing regulatory frameworks to balance innovation with protection, ensuring AI flourishes across Africa without compromising safety or privacy.
Notable activities included high-level meetings on the sidelines, such as President Kagame engaging with the African Union Commission Chairperson, the East African Community Secretary General, and the ITU Secretary General, indicating a strong regional and international focus. The event underscored Africa's determination not to "play catch-up" in the global AI landscape, with a call for technology to be a force for good.
